Car slides off road and damages a fence that leads to an arrest

BEDFORD – A Seymour man was arrested Friday after Bedford Police officers were alerted to an accident in the 4000 block of Washington Avenue. 

The caller told police a vehicle had slid off the road and into a yard and the driver was possibly intoxicated. 

When officers arrived on the scene they found the vehicle off the road and stuck on rocks.

The male driver, 70-year-old James McNeely was in the passenger seat. Police say McNeeley was intoxicated. He told police, he was traveling from Bloomington and got lost, and went off the road. He said he had four bourbon drinks at Smokeworks in Bloomington. He told officers he got lost on his way to Seymour when the crash occurred.

Officers said McNeeley failed field sobriety tests. He was transported to IU Health Hospital for a blood draw. Those results are pending. 

He was arrested on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, OWI endangerment, and OWI per se.

Officers found damage to approximately 100 feet of a fence during the crash.

The vehicle was towed by Mikels Towing and Recovery LLC.
