Change order request discussed during special Redevelopment Commission meeting

BEDFORD – During a special Bedford Redevelopment Commission meeting Monday afternoon, a change order was requested after stability concerns over an unknown concrete grout slab arose during the construction process of the new police station.

As part of the contract of services awarded to Fox Construction, the tile floor in the old Aldi building was to be removed, grounded down to be a smooth surface, and replaced with carpet.

Upon the removal of the tile, a concrete grout pad was found. The pad was worn and in need of improvements, and concern over the flooring and stability of the interior walls become evident.

Fox Construction requested a change order, to include an additional cost of $40,856 to replace the concrete pad with a sturdier material.

Bedford Redevelopment Commission member Ryan Griffith

Commission member Ryan Griffith shared concern over the cost amount and recommended creating a schedule of values, that would then keep track of daily labor and material used, while also approving a change order not to exceed a specified amount.

City Attorney Greg Pittman shared that to accomplish that, the city would have to create a new contract with that requirement and that the change order within the schedule of values could not be approved during the meeting.

After discussion, the commission did not approve the request which died for a lack of a motion, and will reconvene during the regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, December 12th at 4 p.m. with their request and a way to determine how to keep the project going.
