Police respond to a domestic dispute report, find meth and arrest the couple

MITCHELL  – A couple was arrested Tuesday after Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to a physical altercation just after 4 p.m. in the 80 block of Gun Club Road.

A male reported his girlfriend had attacked him, spit on him, and bit him. She then tried to gouge his eyes out.

When deputies and Mitchell Police officers arrived they found 19-year-old Michaela Hebert walking behind the apartments.

She told police that 48-year-old Shane Burleigh had hit her first.

Additional officers found Burleigh outside of the apartment. When officers requested Burleigh to come to them, Burleigh attempted to enter the apartment instead. However, an officer was able to grab Burleigh by the arm and pull him back outside.

Burleigh claimed he wasn’t attempting to “get away, he was only trying to keep the dogs from coming outside”.

A dog did escape but was later retrieved by an officer.

During police questioning, Burleigh reported that he requested assistance after Hebert attacked him. He claims that Hebert bit him, attempted to “claw his eyes out” and also threw electronics in the apartment.

When asked what started the argument, Burleigh said, “she just flipped out and began screaming”.

Police reported that Burleigh had blood on the right side of his face.

Officers then entered the apartment to ensure the apartment was empty. While inside, an officer noticed a baggie of crystal meth on a coffee table. Police also saw two glass smoking devices in plain view. One device tested positive for meth. Officers then obtained a search warrant for the apartment.

A broken glass smoking pipe that tested positive for meth was found in a dresser during that search.

Hebert and Burleigh were both detained on charges of domestic battery and possession of meth.
