Five people were injured in a head-on collision on Thanksgiving Day

MITCHELL – Five people were injured in a two-vehicle accident in the 700 block of Sportsman Club Road on Thanksgiving day. The accident was reported at 10 p.m.

According to a Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department report, 24-year-old Robert Childers, of Seymour, was traveling south in a 2014 red Fiat 500 on Sportsman Club Road. He told police he was on the wrong side of the road “a little bit” when he topped the hill and his car collided with a 2002 Dodge Caravan driven by 54-year-old Mabel Smith, of Mitchell, head-on.

Childers told police “he was afraid of what he did” and walked to a friend’s house. Childers was located and brought back to the scene. He admitted he had been drinking. He did submit to a blood draw and those results are pending.

Smith suffered abdomen and hip injuries. Her passengers were also injured.

All were transported to local hospitals for treatment.

Both vehicles were heavily damaged and towed from the scene by Jackson’s Heavy Haul.  Damage was between $50,001 to $100,000.

Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputies Oolitic Town Marshal’s Office, Marion Township Volunteer Fire Department, Seals Ambulance Service, and IU Health Ambulance Service responded to the scene.
