Refusal to cooperate with police officers leads to Bedford teen arrest

BEDFORD – A Bedford teen was arrested on Wednesday, November 9th when Bedford Police Officers were called to the 1000 block of 25th Street at 10:33 p.m. after a report of an unwanted person.

Shawn Deaton

The male caller told police, 19-year-old Shawn Deaton refused to his property.

Police found Deaton sitting in a chair outside near the front door of the home along with the caller who was standing on the porch.

The caller explained to officers that he recently picked Deaton up from rehab with plans to take him to his grandmother’s. It was at that time that Deaton began “freaking out”. The caller and his wife preceded to take Deaton to Bloomington but he refused to get out of the vehicle.

When they arrived back in Bedford police officers assisted the caller and had to physically remove Deaton from the vehicle. Deaton then left but later returned to the caller’s home. The caller requested Deaton be served a no-trespass order from the home.

Deaton told officers he had been staying at the home for 4 to 5 months, however, the caller interrupted and stated Deaton arrived “on Saturday from Ohio” and that was a “straight-faced lie”.

The caller was also able to show officers text messages showing Deaton had been staying at a rehabilitation center.

Deaton was served a no-trespass order. While serving that order, Deaton became confrontational with the officers. He was told to stop or he would be detained.  He continued to argue stating that he lived at the residence. An officer attempted to detain Deaton but he pulled away and walked away. The officer allowed Deaton to leave and told him not to return. Deaton then yelled at the officer and accused the officer of “assaulting him”.

After several more commands to leave, and several more opportunities for Deaton to do so, the officers detained Deaton. Deaton was arrested on a charge of criminal trespass.

When being escorted to a patrol car Deaton refused to walk and get into the police car. An officer had to get on the other side of the vehicle and pull him into the car. Once at the police station for processing Deaton continued to be uncooperative.

He was then charged with resisting law enforcement by force.
