False identity and drugs lead to arrest

BEDFORD – A Springville man was arrested early Sunday after a Bedford Police officer spotted a gray Nissan Altima change lanes and not using a turn signal as the driver went from the right lane to the left lane on 16th Street.

The officer ran the license plate and learned it returned to a white Buick and not the Altima.

The officer stopped the vehicle at 1:02 a.m. at the intersection of 16th Street and Edgewood Drive.

Arturo Menchaca

The driver, “Hugo Menchaca” told police he had borrowed the car from his Uber driver and had just left McDonald’s.

The officer asked “Hugo”  if there was anything illegal inside the vehicle and he stated “no”.

Canine officer Zazu alerted the officer to the presence of narcotics inside the vehicle.

Officers searched the vehicle and inside a McDonald’s bag, they located a glass smoking device and a plastic box that contained crystal meth.

“Hugo” was detained. Officers soon became suspicious of “Hugo” identity after not being able to obtain a driving status or picture. But, “Hugo” maintained that identity.

Officers were able to later identify “Hugo” as 39-year-old Arturo Menchaca. Officers then learned Menchaca was wanted on an outstanding Lawrence County warrant.

Menchaca was arrested on charges of possession of meth, possession of drug paraphernalia, identity deception, obstruction of justice, and false informing and transported to the Lawrence County Jail.

The vehicle was towed by Mikels Towing and Recovery LLC.
