Social media helps identify Walmart thief

BEDFORD – A Unionville woman was arrested on a theft charge when Bedford Police officers were requested to Walmart after a female was caught switching UPC codes on items.

According to a probable cause affidavit on July 18, 2022, officers were called to Walmart to report a theft.

On July 15, 2022, an asset protection investigator was researching video footage, looking for fraudulent UPC switching. It was discovered that on July 12th, 43-year-old Telitha Albright was captured on that security footage switching 50-cent UPC tags from tumblers and placing them on higher-priced merchandise.

After changing the UPCs she then proceeded to a self-checkout. She rendered a cash payment of $5.89, including tax, for all her items. The total amount of theft in that transaction was $100.69, pre-tax. She then exited the store.

Albright’s photo was later posted to Walmart’s Facebook page where she was identified.

On July 25, 2022, an officer went to Unionville in an attempt to locate Albright but Albright was not home. The officer spoke to Albright’s mother and instructed her to have Albright call them. Officers never received a call from Albright.

The information was forwarded to the Lawrence County Prosecutor’s Office and a warrant was issued for her arrest on a charge of theft.
