Bedford man causes several disturbances and is arrested

BEDFORD – A Bedford man was arrested when Bedford Police officers responded to the Circle K at 1428 16th Street at 4:39 p.m. Saturday after a report of a suspicious male asking customers for cigarettes and yelling and threatening them if they didn’t give him one.

When police arrived they found 53-year-old Gary Sergent. Officers noted they had dealt with Sergent multiple times throughout the day.

Noted in the probable cause affidavit, during the course of the day, officers received three separate calls in reference to Sergent harassing and alarming the public. 

On Saturday, at 2:50 p.m. officers received multiple calls about Sergent walking about the parking lot of Rural King yelling profanities at people. 

At 3:50 p.m. officers were called regarding Sergent walking in the roadway east on 16th Street. The caller felt Sergent may attempt to expose himself.

Then at 4:07 p.m. officers were called to the area of 16th Street and Edgewood Road reporting Sergent was making threats and using vulgar hand signs to the vehicles passing by.

On the last two occasions, officers told Sergent to stop harassing the public..  

When officers arrived at Circle K they found Sergent who appeared intoxicated. When asked how much he had to drink, Sergent replied “not enough”. 

An employee told police Sergent was trying to obtain cigarettes from customers and when they refused he would get upset and yell. He was also making derogatory comments to females.

A female customer told police, Sergent told her she was good-looking and “he’d like to get ahold of her”.

Sergent was then detained. He submitted a preliminary breath test with a result of  0.218 blood-alcohol level. 

Sergent was transported to jail on charges of public intoxication and disorderly conduct.
