Two charged after unaccompanied child found near downtown Madison, Indiana

MADISON, IN – Madison Police officers responded to the area of Third and East streets in reference to a lost child Friday morning.

The Madison Police Department said the two-year-old child was found “scantily dressed, walking alone on the sidewalk” before being secured by officers and transported to the station where the Department of Child Services was contacted to help locate the parents of the child.

Officers followed up on several tips via social media to no avail, before officer Cameron Blankenship noticed a child’s blanket laying in the road on East Third Street near a vehicle. Officer Blankenship made contact with the occupants of the residence and confirmed a child was missing from the home.

After further investigation, 27-year-old Joel A. Toth, of Madison, and 49-year-old Melissa A. Toth, of Petersburg, Illinois were arrested on the preliminary alleged charge of neglect of a dependent, a level 6 felony. Officers said Joel Toth is the child’s father and Melissa Toth is the grandmother.
