Drug arrest made after Trooper notices suspicious vehicle

BEDFORD – A man was arrested on Monday night, on drug charges after an Indiana State Police trooper noticed a Honda Accord pull into a driveway in the 4000 block of US 50 East. The trooper personally knew the homeowners were currently out of town.

Based on it being after 10 p.m., and the amount of recent and past burglaries in rural Lawrence County the trooper believed the occupants of the vehicle could possibly be involved in criminal activity.

After the driver of the Honda pulled into the driveway. The trooper pulled into another driveway just across the road. When the trooper contacted the homeowner, the home owner told the trooper he could see the vehicle on his surveillance cameras. The vehicle had driven down the long driveway, shut the headlights off and turned around. The homeowner told the trooper he did not recognize the vehicle and was not expecting anyone at his home, The home owner then requested the trooper to check the caller’s home.

When the trooper pulled into the driveway, he noticed two men standing outside of the vehicle. The male passenger fled into a nearby cornfield. The trooper then pulled his handgun and ordered that man to stop. The trooper also ordered the second man, who was still at the vehicle, to the ground. The passenger that had fled then returned to the vehicle and dropped a blue backpack. The trooper noticed the backpack was open and believed the passenger ran into the cornfield to conceal some type of contraband.

Both men were detained and placed in handcuffs. The passenger that had run into the cornfield was 37-year-old, Douglas Holbrook.

The trooper searched the area of the cornfield where Holbrook entered and found clear plastic baggies. One baggy contained 7 grams of crystal meth. The remaining six baggies contained marijuana, a cigarette lighter, and a $10 bill.
