SEYMOUR – Jonah Bailey finished fourth overall while powering Bedford North Lawrence to fourth place in the Seymour Invitational during boys high school cross country action on Thursday.

The Stars totaled 87 points. Jennings County won the event with 33, followed by Seymour (48) and Brownstown (79) in the six-team field.

Bailey crossed the line in 17:54.97, while teammate Alex Nicholson was 12th in 19:11.41.

“Jonah put himself into a great spot from the start and he kept improving his position,” BNL interim coach Nick Boyd said. “He started the race smooth inside the top 10 and advanced into the top 5 after the first mile. A solid practice week for him transitioned into a good race tonight.

“Alex had a nice track season in the spring and he is really seeing that transition well into the cross country season. He has gotten off to a great start, finishing inside top 20 at Edgewood last weekend and top 15 today. He is already running faster cross country times than when he finished the season last year.”

Kason Gulley (22nd in 20:26.59), Chase Turner (23rd in 20:34.13) and Lawson Grissom (42nd in 21:35.56) completed the BNL scoring.

Jennings County’s Kraedyn Young was the individual winner in 16:47.47.

In the girls meet, BNL was third with 77 points. Seymour swept the top five spots for a perfect team score of 15, while Jennings County was second with 52.

Francesca Orozco was the top finisher for the Stars, crossing in eighth in 23:12.75. Jabrie Sullivan was 15th in 24:01.94.

“With a strong performance on the second mile, Franny dropped another 34 seconds today, putting her within four seconds of her career best,” BNL coach Jill Vance said. “.She should be under 23 minutes by the end of the month.

“Jabrie cut 18 seconds off her time from Saturday and had a really solid race, as did Ella (Peek), who ran almost 3 minutes faster.”

Peek was 23rd in 25:45.51, while Madison Chandler (24th in 25:55.83) and Emma Baumgart (26th in a career-best 26:05.75) capped the BNL scoring.

Seymour’s Vivienne Siefker was the individual winner in 20:28.35.

The Stars will host the Scott Hiles Invitational on Monday.
