Toll Road crash claims life of Michigan man

LAGRANGE CO. –  Last night at approximately 8:30 p.m., Troopers from the Indiana State Police Toll Road Post responded to a single-vehicle crash near the 128mm on the I-80/90 Toll Road in LaGrange County.

Arriving on scene, troopers located a 2014 Buick Enclave passenger vehicle with heavy damage on the shoulder of the westbound lanes.  Troopers then located the body of the registered owner (Daniel T. Olson, 67, of Sturgis, Michigan) laying unresponsive down in the side ditch.  LaGrange County EMS Personnel arrived on the scene to assist, however, life-saving measures were unsuccessful.  Olson was pronounced dead at the scene by the LaGrange County Coroner.

Trooper Ross Johnson’s preliminary investigation revealed that Olson had initially been traveling eastbound on I-80/90.  For an unknown reason, in the area of the 128mm, Olson’s Buick Enclave contacted the outside (right) guardrail, then crossed through the grass median and stuck the inside (left) guardrail of the west lanes. The Buick crossed the west lanes, crashed into the outside (right) westbound guardrail, rolled over, and came to rest on the westbound shoulder. Daniel Olson was determined to have been the driver and sole occupant at the time of the crash. He was unrestrained, and as a result, ejected from the vehicle during the crash.

There was no immediate evidence to suggest that alcohol or drugs were involved.  The LaGrange County Coroner’s office has scheduled an autopsy to be performed.

Notifications have been made to the Olson family.

Trooper Ross was assisted at the scene by several troopers from the Toll Road Post, LaGrange County (Parkview) EMS and local fire department personnel, the LaGrange County Coroner, and Bill’s Towing service.

At this time there is no further information available for release.
