BEDFORD – Bedford North Lawrence registered five victories on the mat but could not overcome three forfeits in weight classes as Bloomington North posted a 42-34 win during high school wrestling action on Thursday night.

The Stars recorded impressive wins by Patrell Childs, Jorj Filler, Gabe Nelson, Gunner Connaughton and Javi Paredes to put pressure on the Cougars.

“The fact that we were within winning distance of a team that we gave up three forfeits to is a testament to the improvements this team is making,” BNL coach Chris Branam said. “We are starting to figure out what works on the mat and how to bring that intensity.”

Patrell decked Cas Crevello by a 14-5 count at 106 pounds, Filler flattened Johman Tatman in 1:47 at 120, and Nelson smashed down Andrew Therault in 1:39 at 138.

Connaughton conquered Landon Kelley in 2:44 at 195, and Paredes pounded down Chase May in 1:00 at 220.

“Gunner got us on the board with the pin, and Javi fed off that energy and went out and got a quick pin,” Branam said. “Patrell looked great tonight at 106, a total 180-degree after his loss at Scottsburg. I hope we can continue to build off tonight’s performance.”

North got wins from Anthony Fendy (10-0 over Alessia Agostini at 126), Jeremiah Casillas (8-4 over Ethan Stancombe at 145), Cael Hickock (pinning Jaxon Powell in 1:26 at 160), Chase Hostetler (8-2 over Isaac Strange at 170) and Marcus Wynalda (pinning Junior Arellano in 2:37 at 285).

“Alessia deserves a special shoutout,” Branam said. “The team score going into her match was 22-35. If she would have given up a pin, there would have been no chance of us catching up. But she fought off her back and kept the match to a major decision.

“Overall, I’m very happy with tonight’s performance even though we didn’t come away with the win. We just need to carry this attitude into Saturday’s match.”

The Stars will compete in the Northview Invitational on Saturday.

BNL’s Patrell Childs posted a 14-5 triumph at 106 pounds.
