Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department asks for an additional appropriation for fuel and meals

LAWRENCE CO – Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department Major Travis Sanders appeared before the Lawrence County Council in regards to requesting additional funds for fuel and meal costs.

Major Sanders stated due to an increase in the jail population and rise in food costs the jail will need an additional $20,000 to cover expenses. A third party was consulted this year to determine if the department could save money in this area. The study revealed the department is managing well and no savings will be realized by outsourcing the service.

The council approved the request.

The county council also appropriated $595.96 from vendor rebates the department received.

A request for an additional $25,000 for additional fuel costs was approved by the county council. The fuel costs have increased for the department this year. The department is expected to spend $115,000 on fuel this year. This request was the first additional for fuel costs this year.

The department request an appropriation of $555 for the drug buy program. This amount is ordered by the courts upon sentencing to pay for restitution to the Lawrence County Drug Task Force.
