Bridge painting begins Thursday on U.S. 31 in Jackson County

JACKSON CO. — Indiana Department of Transportation contractor Three Star Painting Inc. plans to begin painting work on or after Thursday, May 6, on the U.S. 31 bridge over Mutton Creek Ditch in Jackson County.

The bridge is located approximately one mile north of the I-65 overpass, south of Seymour. Traffic will be shifted with one travel lane in each direction.

The $300,000 contract was awarded in August of 2019 and is expected to be complete by the end of July. Motorists are reminded to slow down, use caution and drive distraction-free in and near all work zones. All work is weather-dependent and schedules are subject to change.

Painting is one of many preservation techniques utilized by INDOT to extend the life of bridge structures. Prior to painting, beams and other components are sandblasted to remove existing rust and the new coat of paint acts as a sealant to protect from water, salt and other chemicals that may cause corrosion.
