Epping, Stars slide past Cardinals

BNL’s Becca Epping posted a key win at No.3 singles as the Stars clipped Bloomfield 3-2 on Monday.

BLOOMFIELD – Becca Epping came through with a critical victory at No.3 singles as Bedford North Lawrence edged Bloomfield 3-2 during girls high school tennis action on Monday afternoon.

The Stars (3-5) swept the doubles, and Epping carded a tough 6-4, 6-3 victory over Emma Vaught for the deciding team point.

“Becca came through for a much-needed win,” BNL coach Joni Stigall said. “I was glad to see her pull that out. Maybe in the past she would have let it slip by. She showed a little more maturity in play and I was happy to see that.”

BNL had to battle in both doubles triumphs. Bella Stigall and Mallory Pride needed a second-set tiebreaker to conquer Gracie Lowery and Thaida Uland 6-4, 7-6 (11-9) at No.1. Kenley Craig and Izzy Alldredge had to rally from a first-set setback to top Kinley Moody and Lucy Allen 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 at No.2.

“It was not a pretty win, but a win nonetheless,” Stigall said. “It was very windy conditions and I’m hoping that was the reason behind our numerous unforced errors.”

The Cardinals took the upper singles with Kylee Shelton stopping Rachel Kidd 6-0, 6-0 at No.1, while Brooklyn Bucher defeated Emily Duncan 6-3, 6-2 at No.2.

BNL will return to action at Scottsburg on Friday.
