Missing man found injured on Broomsage Road

BEDFORD – A man reported missing Saturday night was found injured on Broomsage Road Sunday afternoon.

At 2:50 p.m. Sunday afternoon Shawswick Volunteer Fire Department along with IU Health Ambulance service was called to private property in the 100 block of Broomsage Road in reference to an injured person.

The property owners were not sure how the male ended up on their property.

The male suffered injuries to his face, hands, and leg.

The male was visibly shaken and cold.

According to social media accounts, the 66-year-old male, from Bloomington, had been missing since 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and was last seen in the area of 7th Street and Lincoln Avenue in Bedford.

The male was recovering from a stroke, and was not dressed for the weather.

“If we would have had temperatures like we had last week, this male would not have made it,” said Troy Johnson Shawswick Volunteer Fire Department.

The property owner received a call from a neighbor saying there was a man on his property. The property owner got on his ATV and found the injured man and alerted authorities.

Firefighters used four-wheelers and ATV vehicles to get to the injured man due to the remote area where the male was found. The area could not be accessed by vehicle.

First responders treated the man and placed him on a backboard and he was transported to a waiting ambulance approximately a quarter-mile away.

Rescuers had to transport him through ankle-deep water that covered an area approximately 30 to 40-feet wide.

“It took us approximately twenty minutes to get him out of the woods and to wait for an ambulance,” added Johnson who is also an EMT.

The male was transported to the scene by an IU Ambulance to IU Health Bedford for treatment.
