(BLOOMINGTON) – The O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs and the Department of Information and Library Science at Indiana University Bloomington are second in their academic subjects in the 2020 Academic Ranking of World Universities. Four other disciplines at IU Bloomington rank in the top 20, and two others are in the top 40 of their fields in the world.
The O’Neill School has consistently ranked in the top 10 of the Academic Ranking of World Universities in the past four years and tops all U.S. universities for the public administration category. The Department of Information and Library Science within the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering is ranked second in the library and information science category.
“These rankings indicate that Indiana University’s schools — and its programs in academic disciplines important to the success of our students — are among the very best in the world,” IU Bloomington Provost and Executive Vice President Lauren Robel said. “In addition to furthering the global reputation for excellence of the O’Neill School and Luddy School, they also offer additional evidence that IU’s first-rate faculty are engaged in teaching and scholarship that is not only having a positive impact here in Indiana, but also nationally and internationally.”
The O’Neill School offers students programs in public affairs and public administration fields at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels on campuses in Bloomington and Indianapolis. The school was the first in the U.S. to combine environmental sciences with public management, policy and administration.
The public administration program at IUPUI also ranked in the top 100 in the world.
“We are incredibly proud to be ranked among the finest public administration programs in the world,” O’Neill School Dean Siân Mooney said. “This prestigious recognition is a testament to the outstanding quality of research our faculty produce every year, and I’m particularly proud that both our Bloomington and Indianapolis locations are recognized for their excellence.”
The Department of Information and Library Science has likewise perennially ranked high in the Academic Ranking of World Universities and is consistently in the top 10 of the U.S. News & World Report rankings. With 31 specialties and dual-degree programs, the Information and Library Science program is known for preparing students for a range of careers as librarians or information professionals.
“The Department of Information and Library Science has a proud tradition of being a world leader in research, education and innovation,” said Dennis Groth, interim dean of the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering. “The Luddy School is extremely proud of its ILS students and faculty, and they are richly deserving of this recognition.”
Also in the top 10 of rankings, IU Bloomington came in at No. 8 for communication. Other IU Bloomington programs in the top 40 include finance (No. 13), business administration (No. 15), sociology (No. 15), management (No. 34) and economics (No. 37).
