Oolitic Town Council Approves New Burn Ordinance

(OOLITIC) – The Oolitic Town Council approved a new burn ordinance during their meeting Monday night.

The burn ordinance allows the use of a propane gas grill, charcoal, or clean dry wood.

No burning of leaves, brush, or any kind of debris will be allowed in the Town of Oolitic.

Fires must be attended at all times until completely extinguished.

If fires create a nuisance or fire hazard, they shall be extinguished. The Oolitic Fire Chief may at his or her discretion extinguish any fire that in his or her opinion creates a nuisance or hazard.

No burning shall be conducted during unfavorable meteorological conditions such as temporary inversions, high winds, air stagnation, and the like. No burning shall be conducted during time periods the Oolitic Volunteer Fire Chief pronounces “high risk”.

All permitted fires will not exceed a base of 36 inches in circumference and the base shall have protection such as a metal ring, masonry, brick, stone, or any non-combustible material.

No fire shall extend four feet high.

All permitted fires will be located at least 15 feet from any combustible material.

The new burn ordinance comes after it was required to obtain a burn permit for cookouts.

The burn ordinance will take place 14 days after notification is placed in the local news paper.
