(UNDATED) – I-69 Finish Line is an important final piece that will complete the new Interstate 69 connection between Evansville and Indianapolis. It begins in Martinsville, where crews have been out in force, and construction will continue to move north to Indianapolis. Work will be underway corridor-wide early next year. Gov. Holcomb’s Next Level Connections program fully funded the project and accelerated construction by three years. I-69 Finish Line is scheduled to open to traffic by the end of 2024. The project is expected to improve safety, reduce travel time, and generate $4.1 billion in positive regional economic impact over 20 years. The improvements are expected to result in 1,300 fewer regional crashes each year.
Local officials in Martinsville say the new Grand Valley Boulevard overpass provides significant safety benefits to drivers and pedestrians. Watch this short video to hear what Mayor Kenny Costin, Fire Chief Kevin Greene, and others had to say as the overpass opened to traffic last week. The overpass is the first new I-69 Finish Line bridge to open to traffic. The project includes 39 new bridges and rehabilitating or replacing 42 existing bridges.
- You can watch the progress being made as new bridges are constructed along S.R. 37. Construction may cause single-lane closures daily between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. near Egbert Road, Henderson Ford Road, and Waverly Road.
- Building bridges takes a lot of fill materials. Continue to watch for crews working at night the next few weeks at Henderson Ford Road and Whiteland Road. Trucks are hauling material on Henderson Ford Road north of S.R. 37 and trucks will be traveling across S.R. 37 at Whiteland Road. Portable lights are set up in the area.
- Pavement markings are expected to be completed this week for traffic signals at S.R. 37 and 144 and S.R. 144 at Mann Road/Centenary Road. Watch for possible lane restrictions for overhead signal work at S.R. 37 and 144. The signals are expected to be activated in the coming weeks.
- Progress is being made on utility work at Egbert and Centennial Roads. Lane restrictions are possible. Lane restrictions are also possible as pavement widening begins next month.
- As crews rebuild the southbound lanes of S.R.37 between S.R. 39 and Liberty Church Road, remember the right lane northbound is exit only onto S.R. 39/Morton Avenue and S.R. 37 is reduced to one lane with width restrictions past the exit. This traffic configuration will continue throughout the summer.
- Drivers should be prepared for more changes on S.R. 39 this week. Barrier wall is being moved from the west to the east side of the road between Morton Avenue and the railroad tracks. This will be the traffic configuration in the area for the next several weeks. Watch for changes to access some businesses in the area, including access from the back of buildings.
- The work on S.R. 39 is focused on widening portions of the road to four lanes. Work is underway from S.R. 37 to S.R. 67. You’ll continue to see lane closures and shifting traffic in the area along with the temporary closure of side streets.
- The temporary closure of Mahalasville Road south of S.R. 37 won’t happen until after the July 4th holiday. Watch for the closure on or after July 6. The temporary closure will last about five days. Drivers will use Burton Lane and Southview Road to access Mahalasville Road from the west.
