Obituary: Helen Revere Taggart

December 12, 1929 – March 27, 2020

Helen R. Taggart, 90, of Midway, Kentucky, formerly of Bedford, passed away on Friday, March 27, 2020, at The Homeplace in Midway, Kentucky.

Born on December 12, 1929, in Honolulu, Hawaii, she was the daughter of Oscar Carl and Helen Delight (Collins) Maier.

She married James Franklin “Frank” Taggart on June 5, 1952, and he preceded her in death on November 3, 2006.

She graduated as a voice major from Indiana University in 1952.

She taught voice and piano from home while her children were young, then became a medical transcriptionist at Dunn Memorial Hospital.

Helen played classical guitar and folk harp. She played guitar and sang in a folk duo called ’The Sometime Singers’ with her friend, Pat Phillips, on dulcimer. They often performed at Spring Mill State Park’s pioneer village. She performed with The Little Theater in several musicals. She was an accomplished artist, working primarily in watercolor and pencil. She loved to learn new things.

Helen served as choir director for several Bedford churches over the years, most recently at St. John’s Episcopal Church

Survivors include her son, William James (Diana) Taggart; two daughters, Katherine Sable Taggart and Carolyn Delight (Joel) Cron; three grandchildren, Audrey Rachel Tessar, Sara Revere Taggart, Jessamyn Taggart Cron; one great-grandchild, Oscar Benjamin Taggart Tessar; one sister, Carle Delight Greenwood; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank; and one sister, Wanda Katherine Sauerman.

A private family service will be held at the Ferguson-Lee Chapel of Thorne-George Family Funeral Homes with Phil Thorne officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in Helen’s memory to The Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Alzheimer’s Disease Center, or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
