North Lawrence Community School Board Approves Seeking Appraisals On School Buildings

(BEDFORD) – North Lawrence Community School Board trustees voted to seek two appraisals for the three schools set to close.

The three schools that will be appraised are Fayetteville, Heltonville, and Springville. The School Corporation will seek two appraisals for each building.

In addition, the school board approved the new elementary and middle school boundaries for the corporation. Parents living near boundary lines will be allowed to seek transfers at the end of May for schools they have a preference. The school corporation seeks to honor those requests.

Joe Timbrook of the Lawrence County Workforce Coalition, Matt Fleck of Fleck Education, and Brad Street of North Lawrence Career Center provided the school board with information on the North Lawrence Career Center Strategic Plan. School board members approved the Strategic Plan for 2020-2024.

In other business:

  • The school board approved a Memorandum of Understanding for a $50,000 grant for an Early College Program from the Center of Excellence and Leadership of Learning.
  • Duane Boady’s request to purchase a 54 Lift Station Special Education Bus for $124,000 was approved.
  • The North Lawrence School board rejected a bid to replace the cabinets at Bedford-North Lawrence High School Art Department. Only one bid was submitted and new bids will be sought.

During the public comment period, Tim Morrow asked that the bell at Springville School be given back to the Springville Community. Many from Perry Township would like the bell to be placed in the Springville Park.

Rob Phillips asked the North Lawrence Community Schools why he was being blocked from Facebook. He also questioned the vote on the $245,000 grant by Equitable Education Solutions, and the IT being outsourced in the sum of $130,000.

Ryan Turner commented on how the North Lawrence Career Center impacted his life and allowed him to use the skills he was taught. Attending the Career Center helped him make more money and become successful in operating his own business. He supports the efforts being made to improve the career center.
