Obituary: George Lucas Hardesty

September 6, 1947 – January 24, 2020

George Lucas Hardesty 72, of Bedford, passed away at 3:50 p.m. on Friday, January 24, 2020, at I.U. Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born September 6, 1947, in Lebanon, KY, he was the son of George L. and Elaine (Lucas) Hardesty. He married Sherry L. Shively and she survives. He began his career with the Corps of Engineers then began working at the Louisville Ordnance Station in 1965 where he remained until being transferred to Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center in Crane, IN. He retired on August 3, 2004. He served in the Army National Guard and was an avid cyclist. He belonged to several biking groups and was a huge Dale Earnhardt fan and NASCAR collector. Lucas loved family gatherings and was frequently the family photographer.

Survivors include his wife, Sherry L. Hardesty, of Bedford; three sisters, Maggie L. Coke, Jo Ann Hardesty, and Phyllis K. Williams; a brother, Joseph B. (J.B.) Hardesty and wife, Katie; four nephews, James Kenneth Hourigan, Adam J. Hardesty, and Josh A. Hardesty; two nieces, Tina Williams Hacker and husband, Brian, and Deborah Williams Wiley and husband, Lanny; several great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Raymond G. and William Robert (Bob) Hardesty; a niece, Kimberly Lee Coke.

Funeral services will be conducted at 6 p.m. Thursday, January 30th in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor David Ferry officiating. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until the hour of service on Thursday. A private family burial will be held at the Louisville Memorial
Gardens in Louisville, KY on Friday morning.
