BNL’s Covey, Smith finish 2nd in Old Capitol

CORYDON – Bedford North Lawrence’s James Covey and Conner Smith finished second in their respective weight classes during the Old Capitol Classic at Corydon on Saturday afternoon.

The Stars finished 7th in the 10-team event with 258 points. Floyd Central won the title with 454.

Smith opened with a 4-3 victory over Floyd Central’s Colton Loyd at 160 pounds. He followed with a pin of Evansville Central’s Aaron Garris in 3:30, but he fell to Meade County’s Elijah McCune in 18 seconds in the championship match.

Covey, now 20-2 on the season, topped Evansville Central’s Brayden Bockstege in 41 seconds at 220, and he pinned Meade County’s Che Smith in 3:36. After a win over Milan’s Keegan McKinsey in 1:08, Covey flattened Corydon’s Chase Straub in 5:01.

Covey fell to Gibson Southern’s Macray Robinson in 2:18 in the final.

BNL’s Tristian Hanners was third at 285. He defeated Floyd’s Jackson Emerson 2-0 and pinned Brebeuf’s Logan Petrie in 56 seconds. After suffering a loss to Milan’s Brady Myers in 3:26, Hanners rebounded to pin Southport’s Jashawn Jackson in 4:23 in the third-place match.

Reese Hamblen was 4th for the Stars at 145, and Christian Brown was 5th at 182.

The Stars will host Owen Valley and Paoli on Thursday.
