Bedford Man Dies from Injuries Suffered in Accident

(OOLITIC) – A Bedford man was killed after losing control of his vehicle Thursday night on Patton Hill Road near Strunk Lane.

According to a Lawrence County Police report, 61-year-old Barry Browning, of 536 Patton Hill Rd., died a few hours after the accident.

The accident was reported at 10:57 p.m.

Police say Browning was traveling west on Patton Hill Road when for an unknown reason his 1993 Pontiac Bonneville began to skid and went off the north side of the road. The car hit a barbed wire fence and the soft-earth shoulder of the road. Police say this caused the car to rotate approximately 180 degrees and strike a large tree on the driver’s side door.

Browning suffered serious internal injuries and was trapped inside the wreckage.

He was freed by Bedford and Oolitic firefighters and rushed by ambulance to IU Health Hospital. Browning died a few hours later from his injuries.

Police are unsure if Browning was wearing his seatbelt because of the damage to the vehicle and the steps extraction units had to use to free him from the wreckage.
