(BEDFORD) – A Bedford man suffered serious facial injuries after he crashed his moped Wednesday on Erie Church Road.
Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to the crash at 5:19 p.m. just north of Brown Station Road.
Shawswick Volunteer Fire Department first responders, an AMR ambulance and Stat Flight responded to the scene.
When police arrived they found 27-year-old Tanner Box lying in the middle of the road. He had “significant facial injuries.” Both eyes were swelling shut and black and blue. He had a laceration about his right eye with the skull exposed and his bottom lip was tore.
Box could not tell the officers or emergency crews what happened.
Police say a strong odor of alcohol was coming from Box. He was cited for driving a vehicle while intoxicated. A blood-draw was requested and those results are pending.
Police say it appears Box’s 2009 King MIP 5 moped was left the northside of the roadway for an unknown reason. The moped then overturned, throwing Box to the asphalt. The cycle and Box skidded about 45 feet before coming to a stop on the south side of the road.
Box was flown by Stat Flight to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment. He is listed in stable condition this morning.
