(EDINBURGH) – A 41-year-old Freetown man was killed and his mother was injured in a single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning, on I-65 north near Edinburgh.
Around 2:45 a.m. Shelby County Sheriff’s Department received 911 calls about a vehicle off the roadway and both occupants severely injured.
Shelby County Sheriff Deputies along with medics who were the first on the scene immediately summoned a medical helicopter.
Despite life-saving efforts, Kenneth Cubbage Jr. of Freetown died at the scene.
His mother, 62-year-old Connie Cubbage, a passenger in the vehicle, was transported by ambulance to Methodist Hospital.
Indiana State Trooper Aaron Smith, who is investigating the crash is still unsure why the vehicle left the roadway, but evidence at the scene indicates the vehicle hit a tree and rolled several times.
Police say Kenneth was wearing a seatbelt, but Connie was unrestrained.
Both directions of I-65 were closed. The northbound lanes were affected for approximately two hours while the crash was investigated and the wreckage was removed.
