Charges Filed After Officer Wounded In Struggle With Shoplifter

(INDIANAPOLIS) – Court records say an Indianapolis police officer was wounded last weekend by a suspected shoplifter who fired the officer’s gun during a violent struggle.

Marion County prosecutors have charged 41-year-old William Allen with attempted murder and other charges for the May 5 shooting of Officer Eric Rosenbaum.
Authorities say Rosenbaum confronted Allen near a Lowe’s store on the city’s east side after the shoplifting report. Allen is charged with attacking Rosenbaum and grabbing the officer’s gun after gouging his eyes and injuring his shoulder.
Rosenbaum was shot in the thigh and hospitalized in good condition. Allen fled but was soon arrested by other officers.
Defense attorney Cody Cogswell tells The Indianapolis Star that Allen disputes prosecutors’ description of what happened.
