Roberta Jean Freeman, 89, of Mitchell, passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2019, at Mitchell Manor.
Born May 27, 1929, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Noah Sampson and Bessie Mae (Tolbert) Grimes. She married Rex Albert Freeman November 25, 1950, and he preceded her in death January 10. 2006.
Roberta had been a telephone operator during World War II and was a homemaker. She attended the Mitchell Church of the Nazarene and was a graduate of Mitchell High School in 1947. Roberta loved birds, crocheting, reading, puzzles, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her children, C. Mark (Ila) Freeman of Mitchell, Taylor St. John of Chicago, Gail Elizabeth (Martin) Miller of Indianapolis, grandsons, Ray Sexton, Matt Miller, Eric Miller, and Cody Freeman; great-grandchildren, Luke Miller, Jacob Miller, Michael Miller, Lidia Miller, Marco Miller, and Cyris Freeman; sister, Virginia Bennett, Escondido, California; lifelong family friends, Kim, Neal, and Alisha Briner, and Jordan Fultz.
Her parents; husband; and siblings, Mary Rahn, and Dean Franklin “Frank” Grimes, preceded her in death.
Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 11, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Pastor Joel Parsons officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

John David (J.D.) Moore – Bedford

John David (J.D.) Moore, 66, of Bedford, died Tuesday, May 7, 2019, at I.U. University Hospital in Indianapolis.
Born January 6, 1953, in Bedford, he was the son of Herbert and Frances Elwanda (Louden) Moore. He married Treva Kay Todd on August 16, 1974, and she survives.
He attended Tunnelton High School, finishing and graduating from Bedford High School with the class of 1971. He was a member of the Indiana National Guard from 1972-1978 with a brief time in Germany for training.
He retired as a millwright in 2006 after thirty years at General Motors. He worked out of the local 1076 Evansville Millwright until he went to work at GM. After retirement, he was part owner of TMT Trucking where he was also a driver. He was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Christian Church and the Bedford Masonic Lodge #14 F&AM.
J.D. enjoyed farming, gardening and participated in the Farmer’s Market. He also enjoyed spending time with his car friends at the Cruise-In and driving his ’48 Chevy truck and ’33 Ford Roadster. He and his son remodeled homes, and he also enjoyed traveling to different states for swap meets and recently spent time in Florida.
Survivors include his wife, Treva, of Bedford; a son, Tyler Moore, of Bedford; a brother, Herbert Moore (Chris), of Bedford; two brothers-in-law, Toby and Tony (Sherry) Todd of Heltonville; several nieces and nephews; many close friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Eddie Moore, and a sister-in-law Debbie Todd.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 11th in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Jeff Hudelson officiating. Burial will follow in the Mundell Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday, May 10th and from 10 a.m. until the hour of service on Saturday, May 11th at the Day & Carter Mortuary. A Masonic service will be at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 10th. Contributions may be made to the Lawrence County Cancer Patient Services.
