Monroe County Coroner Waiting on DNR Results in Fatal Fire

(BLOOMINGTON) – Monroe County Coroner Joani Shields says it may be several weeks before she knows positively the identity of the male whose body was found after a garage fire on State Road 446.

Coroner Shields submitted DNA for testing because of the condition of the body.
The fire in the 9600 block of State Road 446 was reported just after 9 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 25 after a passing motorist saw the blaze and dialed 911.
Monroe Fire Protection District Chief Dustin Dillard said when firefighters arrived on the scene about 90 percent of the 22-by-30-foot garage had burned and the roof and sides had collapsed. Flames had spread to an adjacent field.
That night a woman approached firefighters at the scene saying her husband was missing and that prompted a search for the missing man. Firefighters and police found who they believe is his body under the rubble.
The State Fire Marshal was called to the scene and determined the fire was not intentionally set.
The Indiana State Police is investigating the death.
