Indiana Coal Mine To Close This Spring, Costing 80 Jobs

(CHANDLER) – A southwestern Indiana coal mine will close this spring, costing about 80 workers their jobs at the surface mine.

White Stallion Energy of Evansville says in a required notice to Indiana’s Department of Workforce Development that mining activity will cease in early April at the Liberty Mine.
The notice says workers at the Warrick County mine that’s near the town of Chandler will be given the chance to transfer to one of the company’s other mine sites.
The Evansville Courier & Press reports that the mine’s planned closure follows Alcoa Warrick Operations’ recent announcement that it planned to buy coal from other sources to fuel its restarted aluminum smelter lines in nearby Boonville.
Boonville Mayor Charlie Wyatt says he’s disappointed by the news of the mine’s pending closure.
