Officers Rescue Fisherman Who Fell Through Ice In DeKalb County

(WATERLOO) – Authorities say a fisherman who fell through the ice is OK after being rescued from neck-deep water in a pond in northeastern Indiana.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department says deputies and Waterloo and Indiana State Police rescued 68-year-old Randall Deetz from the rural pond northwest of the town of Waterloo or about 25 miles north of Fort Wayne.
The department says that when Deputy Ben Browand arrived on the scene shortly before noon Wednesday, Deetz told him he had been in the water for about 15 minutes and was losing strength. He was holding himself up with a rope tied to a tree.
Browand pushed a boat toward Deetz, climbed inside and held Deetz above water until more officers arrived.
WANE-TV reports Deetz is a former DeKalb County commissioner.
