Charles Edward Phillips, 80, of Mitchell, passed away Sunday, January 15, 2017, at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehabilitation Center.
Born August 11, 1936, in French Lick, he was the son of Sammy and Gertrude (Deal) Phillips. He married Grace Carolyn Abel November 14, 1957. Charles retired from Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division and was a farmer. He was a member of the Bride of Christ Fellowship and Mitchell Masonic Lodge No. 228 F. & A.M. He loved to golf and fish, and attended all of his grandchildren’s sporting events. Charles was a U. S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War, a veteran of the Indiana National Guard, and a member of American Legion Post No. 250.
Survivors include his wife, Grace Carolyn Phillips of Mitchell; children, Gregory Lee (Janet) Phillips of Mitchell, Gordon Gene (Carol) Phillips of Mitchell, Sharon L. (Terry) Purdy of Heltonville; grandchildren, Tyler S. Phillips, Taylor S. Phillips, Trevor K. Phillips, Chad N. Phillips, and Jarrett L. Phillips; sister, Bertha Bell of Spencer
His parents and brother, Ronald Phillips, preceded him in death.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 18, at Bride of Christ Fellowship with Brother Jerry Allen officiating. Burial will be in Talbott Cemetery with military honors accorded by American Legion Post No. 250 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107. Friends may call from 4 p.m. till 8 p.m. Tuesday at Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center and from 10 a.m. until the service on Wednesday at the church. Masonic Lodge No. 228 F. & A.M. will conduct a memorial service at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
