Olin Gale Kern – Bedford
November 11, 1929 – September 19, 2015
Olin Gale Kern, 85, of Bedford, passed away on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at the IU Health Bloomington Hospital.
Olin was born November 11, 1929 in Lawrence Co. and was the son of Volney L. and Grace (Hall) Kern. He married Marta Jo Holmes on June 15, 1955 and this was their 60th wedding anniversary. He attended Fayetteville School graduating with the class of 1948. After graduation, he worked as a mechanic and painter prior to entering the U.S. Army on March 4, 1951. He completed his military service during the Korean War and was discharged with the rank of Sgt. On March 13, 1953.
Olin was employed by the Monon Railroad in their offices in Bedford and Detroit, MI. He began his employment with National Gypsum Co. at Shoals in 1959. He retired in 1991 after 32 years of service with the company. During his retirement, he especially enjoyed attending various activities of his grandchildren, woodworking, rebuilding cars, fishing, and spending time with family. By living up to the “My Dad Can Fix Anything” family expression, he never lacked projects to complete.He was baptized August 19, 1941, and was a lifetime member of the Old Union Christian Church. A faithful and active member of the church, he served for many years in various capacities, including: deacon, trustee, teacher, and elder. In later years he attended Leatherwood Christian Church.
For the past three years, Olin was a resident of Autumn Hills in Bloomington, Indiana, where the staff provided professional, compassionate, and loving care for their “Pa-Paw”.
Olin is survived by his wife, Marta Jo Kern; two daughters, Julie (Brian) Waldo, of Bedford and Jayma (Ken) Ambrose of California; two grandchildren, Benjamin and Sarah Waldo; a sister, Mabel Henderson; nieces, Myra (Denver) England, Joyce (Bill) Burns and nephews, Kenny Gale Brock and Tom Henderson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Paul and Waldo Kenneth Kern; sister, Elsie Brock; niece, Mona Grace (Brock) Cobb and nephews, Joel Henderson and James Drew Brock.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 24th in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastors Charlie Scott and Sherman Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in the Old Union Cemetery where military rites will be accorded at the graveside by members of Gillen Post #33 American Legion and D.A.V. Chapter #2. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, September 23rd and from 10 a.m. until the hour of service on Thursday, September 24th at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Edith Mae Harris – Bedford

Edith Mae Harris, 84, of Bedford, died at 7:25 a.m. on Monday, September 21, 2015 at Westview Nursing and Rehab.
Born March 19, 1931 in Kentucky, she was the daughter of George and Ottie Mae (Hammond) Jewell. She married George “Fred” Harris on March 25, 1955 and he survives. She was a homemaker and a member of the White River Baptist Church for fifty-nine years.
Survivors include her husband, Fred, of Bedford; two daughters, Georgeanna Harris and Angela Myers and husband, Brian all of Bedford; a grandson, Dakota Myers of Bedford; a granddaughter, Kristy Myers, of Bedford; four great grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Jewell and wife, Pat and Harold Jewell all of Ohio; three sisters, Margaret Godsey, Gladys Wright and husband, Gene and Elsie Shaw all of Kentucky; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Gaither Hammond.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 am on Thursday, September 24th at the White River Baptist Church with Kenny Dalton and Kyle Hall officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. till 8 p.m. on Wednesday, September 23rd at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Jay Donald Baker – Bedford
June 23, 1956 – September 19, 2015
Jay Donald Baker, 59, of Bedford, died Saturday, September 19, 2015 after a brief illness.
Born June 23, 1956 in Bedford, he was the son of Billy Don and Roberta (Chastain) Baker. He played basketball for Shawswick High School before graduating with the class of 1974. He was a machine repairman at GM until retirement in 2010.
Survivors include two daughters, Whitney Baker (Dakota Evans) of Bedford, Haley Hatfield (Bobby) of McCordsville; a son, Garrett Baker (Jodi) of Bloomington; a sister, Denise Dillman (Jay) of Bedford; sister-in-law, A.J. Sloan (Jim) of Zionsville; aunt, Mary Scheffel of Bedford; several nieces and nephews including Molly Mayer (Tyler) and their children, Jay and Leo; several cousins and his special little buddy, Klayton Pence.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Friday, September 25th in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Rev. Jim McDowell officiating. Burial will follow in the Hilltop Cemetery in Avoca. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 24th at the Day & Carter Mortuary.
Pallbearers are: Bill Burns, Mike Hutton, Scott Ramft, Greg Walters, Brett Dillman, Justin Plummer and Terry Waggoner.
