Pauline Scherschel – Bedford
A. Pauline Scherschel, 93, went home to Jesus on Wednesday, October 2, 2013.
A lifelong resident of the Coxton neighborhood, she had been a resident of Garden Villa since March of this year. Born January 23, 1920, Pauline was the daughter of Stephen Edward and Anna (Easton) Crabb. She was a 1939 graduate of Shawswick High School and married Edward W. Scherschel on April 27, 1942. He preceded her in death on April 11, 1990. Also preceding her were sons Karl Edward, Harold William and Timothy Leander Scherschel; her parents and siblings Stephen E, Carl T and Ivy Pearl Crabb and Edith Butler.
She is survived by sons Bernard Allen, Benjamin Allen (Rose) and Gary Kevin (Sheila) Scherschel of Bedford; daughter Ann Scherschel of Indianapolis; daughter-in-laws Carol Scherschel of Bedford and Judith Scherschel of Indianapolis; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Pauline loved people and working with the public. She was a 4-H club leader for at least 20 years before working 2 years at Diane’s Dress Shop and 15 years as a Montgomery Ward sales associate, retiring in 1985. To keep busy after retirement she became a member of the Dunn Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, helped organize the surgery hostess group, was a member of TWIGS (Together With Important Goals Shared) and served as a receptionist at the hospital. She accumulated more than 7,000 hours of service in her 17+ years of volunteering at the hospital. Pauline was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Greenwood, IN, St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church in Bedford and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.
Funeral Services will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, October 7, 2013 at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church with burial to follow at Cresthaven Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Cresthaven
Funeral Home, with rosary service at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home, Cresthaven Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Claude Chastain Jr. – Mitchell
Claude Chastain, Jr., 82, passed away at 8:40 a.m. Friday, October 4, 2013, at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital in Bedford.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, October 7, at the Mitchell Church of the Nazarene.
Friends may call from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Joseph James King – Huron
Joseph James King, 84, passed away Thursday, October 3, 2013, at the home of his daughter, Sandra Kay Mead, in Prospect, Kentucky.
Funeral service will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday, October 7, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center.

James E. Byrd – Norman
James E. Byrd, 81, of Norman, IN, died at 5:08 pm on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at his residence.
Born September 7, 1932 in Hazard, KY, he was the son of Oscar Washington Byrd and Pearl Byrd. He had worked in area stone mills.
Survivors include two sons, Buddy Connerlly of Houston, TX and Donald P. Byrd and wife, Martha of Bedford; three daughters, Suzie Martinez and husband, David of Frostproof, FL, Anna Henderson and husband, Raymond of Orleans, Judy Reef and husband, Doug of Norman; a step-daughter, Glenda Wellman-Nicholson; twelve grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; three step great grandchildren; a sister Thelma Chastain and a brother, Donald H. Byrd both of Texas; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted at 3:30 pm on Monday, October 7th at the Judah Church of Christ Cemetery with Johnny Johnson officiating. Burial will follow. Visitation will be from 1 pm to 3 pm on Monday, October 7th at the Day & Carter Mortuary.
