The following obituaries were received for Monday –


Ira “Lee” Shafer – Bedford
Ira “Lee” Shafer, 72, of Bedford, passed away at 4:30 a.m. on Friday, December 28, 2012, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.
Born June 16, 1940 in Carrol, Trumble Co., Kentucky, he was the son of Charles and
Mary Blanch Shafer. He was the former owner of the Early Bird Café in Bedford. Ira also raised horses and cattle, and bred horses for many years. He had been a member of the Pinto Horse Association., American Paint Horse Association, American Quarter Horse Society, and The American Legion. He loved gardening and woodworking. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force.
He is survived by his long term companion, Susan Jones, of Bedford.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
No services are scheduled at this time. A memorial service will take place at a later date.
Arrangements are under the direction of Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford.

Lawrence David McCarty – Shoals
Lawrence David McCarty, 59, of Shoals, passed away on December 26, 2012 at his home.
He was born December 22, 1953 in Indianapolis to the late Lawrence Dale and Evelyn Marie (Reynolds) McCarty.
He married Delcie Witt on September 5, 1971 in Shoals and she survives. He was recently disabled, but had previously worked as a carpenter.
He is survived by his wife Delcie, of Shoals; two daughters, Amanda McCarty, of Mitchell and Tiffany McCarty, of Shoals, three sons, Carl McCarty, of Cale, Jerry McCarty, of Bedford, Michael McCarty, of Cale; 8 granddaughters, Heather Hamblin, Amber McCarty, Gabrielle McCarty, Jada Benge, Ashley Nichole McCarty, Sophia McCarty, Aerial McCarty and Madison McCarty; 7 grandsons, David McCarty, Christopher McCarty, Cody McCarty, Collin McCarty, Damion McCarty, Elijah McCarty and Jacob McCarty; great grandson Ian Hamblin; three sisters, Debbie Bell, Linda Miller and Vivian Criscilles, all of Indianapolis; three brothers, Danny, Don and Dale McCarty, all of Indianapolis.
Cremation was chosen and a memorial service will be announced at a later date.

La Verne Hackney – Bedford
LaVerne Hackney, 74 of Bedford, passed away on Saturday December 29, 2012 at 10:03 a.m. at St. Vincent-Dunn Hospital. He was born in Paoli on October 4, 1938 to Vern & Kathleen (Ivy) Hackney. He married Oneita G (Perry) Hackney and she preceded him in death on May 19, 1995. LaVerne retired from Ford (Visteon) in Bedford. He was a US Air Force Veteran.
Survivors include his son, Kent Hackney, of Bedford; daughter, Kyle Hackney of Bedford; 2 grandsons, Logan Hackney and Derrick Hackney, both of Bedford, one sister, Kay Hackney of Bedford and one brother, Gary Hackney, of Florida
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one brother, Glen Hackney and one sister Ivy Hackney
Funeral Services will be on Thursday January 3, 2013 at 1 p.m. at Cresthaven Funeral Home. Friends may call on Wednesday January 2, 2013 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Cresthaven Funeral Home. Burial will be in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.
