Melvin L. Hammel, 94, Bedford

Melvin L. Hammel of Bedford passed away Sunday night at Paoli Health and Living at the age of 94.


Born in 1914 in Versailles and adopted by Frank and May Hammel, Melvin was the owner and operator of Stephenson’s Clothing and Jester Department Store in Bedford, member of Orleans Christian Church, Army veteran of World War II, and also a member of Bedford Masonic Lodge #14, Bedford Shrine Club, American Legion Gillen Post 33, and former member of the Dunn Memorial Hospital board, Bedford City Council and Lawrence County Commission.
He is survived by his son, Elvin, daughters Sally, Amy and Laura, 9 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and both wives Portia and Mary.
Services will be held Thursday afternoon at 1:00pm at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford with burial to follow at Cresthaven Memory Gardens.
Visitation will be tomorrow from 2:00 until 8:00pm and again from 9:00am until time of service Thursday at Ferguson-Lee.
