Bedford car goes up in flames

BEDFORD – Around 1 p.m. Monday, the Bedford Fire Department responded to reports of a car engulfed in flames in front of El Compadre located at 3126 John A Williams Blvd.

Fire Chief John Hughes says that they are unsure how the fire started, but it originated in the engine compartment.

The owner of the vehicle, Jerzee Gee (21), was driving the vehicle when it caught fire. “I was on the road between Walmart and the strip, going to El Compadre. A guy was coming from Walmart and waved at me to turn,” Jerzee said, “I thought he was just being nice and letting me go.”

“I had no idea. So I go to park and smoke starts coming into the inside of my car.” Jerzee reports that the man followed her to the parking lot and alerted her to the flames that started underneath the car. Jerzee was able to exit the vehicle unharmed before the fire worsened.

While the reason for the fire remains unknown, witnesses and a fireman said it looked like an electrical fire. Jerzee said her car has never had electrical problems before this.

Two trucks were dispatched, Engine Two from Station Two, and Rescue One from Headquarters. Five fire-fighters responded, and the flames were quickly extinguished. No one was injured in the incident, though it drew a small crowd of onlookers.
