INDIANA – Governor Eric J. Holcomb is directing flags to be flown at half-staff to honor the life and legacy of former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.
Madeleine Albright, the first female US secretary of state and who helped steer Western foreign policy in the aftermath of the Cold War, has died from cancer. She was 84 years old.
Albright rose to power and fame as a brilliant analyst of world affairs and a White House counselor on national security. Under President Bill Clinton, she became the country’s representative to the United Nations (1993-97) and secretary of state (1997-2001), making her the highest-ranking woman in the history of the American government at the time.
She championed the expansion of NATO, pushed for the alliance to intervene in the Balkans to stop genocide and ethnic cleansing, sought to reduce the spread of nuclear weapons, and championed human rights and democracy across the globe.
Flags should be flown at half-staff immediately until sunset on Sunday, March 27. Gov. Holcomb is asking businesses and residents in Indiana to lower their flags.
