BNL sweeps past Martinsville

BNL’s Emma Gabhart won two events as the Stars swept to wins over Martinsville on Tuesday night.

MARTINSVILLE – Bedford North Lawrence swept to a pair of victories over Martinsville during high school swimming action on Tuesday night.

The Stars splashed to a 108-52 triumph with nine wins in the boys meet, while the BNL girls recorded a 90-69 win.

Alexander Swenson and John Allen were double winners for the Stars in the boys meet. Swenson took the 200-yard freestyle in 1:57.78 and the 100 backstroke in 58.41, while Allen touched first in the 50 free (24.0) and the 500 free (5:36.19).

That duo also helped the Stars win the 200 medley relay (with Cole Baker and Garrett Henson in 1:51.48), and the 400 free relay (with Baker and Henson in 3:41.51).

“We mixed the lineup tonight to see what the kids could do in some events they don’t normally swim,” BNL coach Adam Young said. “We had a lot of wins.”

Henson won the 100 butterfly (1:07.25), and freshman Isaiah Eicle claimed the 100 breaststroke in 1:19.6. BNL also took the 200 free relay with Trey Kimbley, Cole Dennis, Adam Tlustek and Eicle combining to clock 1:47.40.

“Our depth was solid,” Young said. “Isaiah had a great meet and went under 1:00 for the first time in the 100 free. He is really coming along and we need big things from him come sectional time. Trey Kimbley is another that is really improving fast. He has been on a roll lately and continues to pile up PRs.”

In the girls meet, Emma Gabhart was a double winner for BNL as she came home in 1:02.49 in the 100 butterfly and 1:09.58 in the 100 breaststroke (missing the school record by .21 seconds).

Ursula Patton won the 200 individual medley (2:31.48), Shelby Slaughter took the 500 free (6:08.81) and Kaitlyn Hackney won the 100 backstroke (1:10.31).

The Stars also won the 400 free relay with Patton, Hackney, Slaughter and Gabhart clocking 4:10.68.

BNL will host New Albany and celebrate Senior Day on Saturday.
