Hoosiers Outrun Cancer Running Virtually For 2020

(BLOOMINGTON) – For the first time in two decades, IU Memorial Stadium will not host thousands of community members in celebration of those who have been impacted by cancer. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Bloomington Health Foundation has announced that the 21st running of Hoosiers Outrun Cancer (HOC) will be held in a virtual format this year.

In a video message posted on the HOC website, BHF President and CEO Jon Barada, joined by HOC Committee Chair Shawn Williams, shared that the virtual format will “ensure the well-being of our community and hold an event that can be safely enjoyed by all.”

Those wishing to participate can register online at hoosiersoutruncancer.org and will receive a shirt and commemorative race bib in the mail. Participants are then encouraged to don their shirt on September 26th and select their own socially distanced route to complete. That morning at 9:30 A.M., HOC will host a virtual program on their website and Facebook page that will include many of the beloved pre-race traditions.

“While this year’s event will be different than the past 20, we are grateful for the opportunity to share this meaningful event with even more Hoosiers across our state,” said Williams.

Hoosiers Outrun Cancer, created in 2000, is one of Bloomington’s largest annual events. Last fall, HOC hosted over 5,000 participants at their 20th celebration. Over the past 20 years, the 5K run/walk has raised nearly $4 million in support of cancer patient needs beyond clinical care including counseling sessions, massages, wigs, prosthetics, transportation for medical appointments, and more.
