Heltonville Teen Dies at Bartholomew Juvenile Detention Center

(COLUMBUS) – Columbus Police are investigating the death of a Heltonville teen who committed suicide at the Bartholomew County Juvenile Detention Center.

According to a Columbus Police Department press release, officers were summoned to the juvenile detention center, at 2359 Illinois Ave., Tuesday at 10:25 p.m. after a report a 17-year-old attempted to hang himself with a bedsheet.

Officers, along with paramedics and Columbus firefighters, administered aid attempting to revive the boy, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Bartholomew County Deputy Coroner Jay Frederick has ruled the death a suicide. He confirmed the 17-year-old died from asphyxiation by hanging.

Police did confirm that there are cameras in the area within the youth services building where the juvenile was detained.
