INDOT reminds drivers to watch for road crews as daylight hours decrease

INDIANA — With seasonal changes bringing shorter days and reduced evening visibility, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is urging drivers to use extra caution and remain vigilant for highway maintenance crews working along state roadways.

To protect workers operating in low-light and early-night conditions, INDOT is continuing its safety initiative, Project Greenlight. The program equips highway personnel with Guardian Angel safety devices—wearable units featuring high-visibility flashing green light patterns visible from all directions.

According to INDOT, switching to the specialized green lighting scheme drastically improves crew recognition for approaching motorists. According to INDOT officials, green lights, become 300% more visible to the human eye, and become 89% more visible to the traveling public, according to recent studies.

INDOT has distributed approximately 1,100 wearable light units to transportation workers across Indiana under Project Greenlight.

Transportation officials remind motorists to slow down, eliminate distractions, and allow extra space when approaching work zones and roadside vehicles with active warning lights.
