WEST LAFAYETTE — For 14 consecutive years, Purdue University has held tuition flat while expanding academic opportunities, solidifying its position as a national leader in higher education value and affordability.

By maintaining constant tuition rates and pioneering flexible academic programs, the university has delivered cumulative savings of more than $2.5 billion in educational expenses to students and their families since 2013, spanning 12 graduating classes that have experienced zero tuition increases.

“Our goal is straightforward: giving students and families the greatest possible return on their Purdue investment,” said Purdue interim President Mitch Daniels. “That means keeping costs down, shortening degree pathways when it makes sense, and providing students with the education and opportunities that will prepare them for whatever comes next.”
Low Costs and Debt-Free Graduation
In addition to frozen tuition, Purdue’s room and board rates remain the most affordable by a significant margin among Big Ten Conference universities, a standing that will extend into the 2027–28 academic year. In 2012, Purdue ranked as the second-most expensive Big Ten institution for housing and dining. Upcoming meal plan rates for 2027–28 will also remain well below the Big Ten average for comparable plans.
The focus on affordability has led to strong financial outcomes for graduates:
- Debt-Free Rate: 67% of Purdue students graduate without student debt, compared to the national average of 36%.
- Time to Degree: The average time to complete a degree at Purdue has dropped to 3.84 years.
- In-State Tuition: Annual tuition for Indiana residents remains under $10,000.
- Targeted Financial Support: Programs like the Boiler Gold Grant cover up to eight semesters of tuition, fees, and books for eligible Indiana residents.
Accelerated Degrees and Innovation
Purdue continues to expand accelerated degree pathways designed to lower total educational costs. Nearly 60 majors now offer the Degree in 3 program, which was launched in 2017 as one of the nation’s first accelerated undergraduate initiatives. Completing a bachelor’s degree in three years can save students up to $19,000 in expenses while allowing them to enter the workforce or graduate school a year earlier.
The university is also piloting the Bachelor’s to Doctorate in 7 Years program, providing a streamlined timeline and reduced overall costs for students pursuing eligible doctoral degrees.
Strong Demand and Strategic Reinvestment
Purdue’s value proposition continues to drive surging interest, marked by an 80% increase in applications over the past decade and near-record enrollment for the fall 2026 freshman class.
National rankings reflect the university’s performance:
- SmartAsset (2026): Ranked No. 2 nationally among Best Value Public Universities.
- FREOPP (2024): Ranked the No. 1 public university in Indiana for return on investment.
While holding tuition constant, Purdue has simultaneously invested in campus infrastructure and academic growth. The university has added six new residence halls over the last decade, expanding campus housing capacity to support more than 18,500 students. Research expenditures surpassed $1 billion in 2025, and merit-based compensation increases have been provided to faculty and staff every year since 2010 (with the exception of the 2020–21 pandemic year).
