Medicare open enrollment began today, Oct. 15, runs through Dec. 7

BALTIMORE, MD – Medicare open enrollment begins today, Oct. 15, giving millions of Americans an opportunity to review their health insurance coverage and make changes for the coming year.

The annual enrollment period runs through Dec. 7. During this time, people with Medicare can review their current plans, compare coverage options, and determine whether their existing insurance will continue to meet their health care needs in 2027.

Medicare beneficiaries can switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan, move from Medicare Advantage to Original Medicare, change Medicare Advantage plans, or join, drop, or change a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan.

Any changes made during open enrollment generally take effect Jan. 1, 2027.

Medicare officials encourage beneficiaries to review their coverage each year rather than automatically renewing their current plans. Premiums, deductibles, prescription drug coverage, provider networks, and other benefits can change from one year to the next.

Beneficiaries should check whether their doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies are included in a plan’s network and whether their prescriptions remain covered at an affordable cost. Comparing plans can help people avoid unexpected expenses and find coverage that better fits their needs.

People who are satisfied with their current coverage may not need to make changes, but reviewing the available options can help ensure they understand any updates to their plan for the upcoming year.

Medicare beneficiaries can compare plans and review coverage information through the official Medicare website at Medicare.gov or by calling 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).

Free, personalized assistance is also available through the State Health Insurance Assistance Program, known as SHIP, which helps Medicare beneficiaries understand their options and make informed decisions.

The Dec. 7 deadline applies to the annual Medicare open enrollment period. Beneficiaries should review their options and complete any desired changes before the deadline.
