City of Bloomington awards $54,859 to 31 local artists to advance creative careers

BLOOMINGTON – The City of Bloomington, through the Bloomington Arts Commission (BAC), has awarded $54,859 in Artistic Advancement Grants to 31 artists with a Bloomington-based creative practice. The grants, of up to $2,000 each, go directly to individual artists to fund the concrete next steps in their careers: studio time to finish an album, materials for a new body of work, framing for an upcoming exhibition, or a seat at a national writing conference.

Most working artists operate as small, independent businesses. They invest their own money in equipment, materials, and professional development long before a piece is sold, a book is published, or a show opens. Artistic Advancement Grants meet artists at that critical point, helping cover the costs that can move a project from an idea to completion. With an average award of about $1,770, these targeted grants give Bloomington’s creative entrepreneurs the resources to keep working, reach new audiences, and build sustainable careers and markets for their work.

This year’s recipients work across music, visual art and craft, literature, film and audio, and movement.

“Every one of these grants is an investment in a Bloomington small business,” said BAC Chair Nada Abdelrahim. “When an artist can finish an album, publish a book, or build out a studio here, that work, and the income it generates, stays in our community. Creative entrepreneurs help make Bloomington the place it is, and we want them to be able to build lasting careers here.”

The 2026 BAC Artistic Advancement Grant recipients are: Olivia Adams, Katina Bitsicas, Elizabeth Busey, Simone Cabral Vilaca, Timothy Clougher, John Duffy, Liliana Guzman, Samantha Hyde, Josh Johnson, Justin Kern, Hsuan Kitano, Christopher McConnell, Claire Miller, Jerry Miller, Sharon Moore, Nick Najera, Tristra Newyear Yeager, Ron Osgood, Elke Pessl, Benjamin Pines, Garrett Poortinga, Jordan Rader, Con Ray, Timothy Reinholz, Michael Santos, Amanda Smith, Seth Teeters, Brian Trippi, Jon Vickers, Margie Wiltz, and Matthew Woods.

The BAC’s Operations Cycle, which provides funds to support operational costs for 501(c)(3) organizations with arts-centered missions and Bloomington-based impact, closed Sept. 24. Recipients will be announced later this fall. More information about the City’s arts grants is available at bloomington.in.gov/arts/grants.
