BEDFORD — A Bedford man faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges after police found him disoriented inside a parked car at a local gas station Friday morning, allegedly in possession of a loaded handgun, methamphetamine residue, and thousands of dollars in cash.

Robert A. Northern, 51, was taken into custody on September 25, 2026, by the Bedford Police Department following a welfare check at Revere’s Food and Fuel on 16th Street.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Bedford Police Officer Taylor Daugherty, Northern faces preliminary charges of:
- Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon — Level 4 Felony
- Possession of Methamphetamine — Level 6 Felony
- Possession of a Device or Substance to Interfere with a Drug Test — Class B Misdemeanor
Welfare Check Reveals Disoriented Driver
Officers were dispatched to the gas station around 7:35 a.m. after receiving a report of a male slumped over the steering wheel of a red 2014 Chevrolet Cruze.
Officer Daugherty arrived on scene and knocked on the driver’s window multiple times before the occupant, later identified as Northern, became alert. According to court documents, Northern struggled to unlock the door, appeared extremely disoriented, and provided unintelligible responses when asked what he was doing.
Upon exiting the vehicle, Northern demonstrated poor balance and hesitated repeatedly when asked if weapons were present inside the car, stating, “there may be, but I don’t know.” EMS personnel evaluated Northern at the scene, but he declined medical transport to the hospital.
K-9 Alert Leads to Gun, Cash, and Synthetic Urine Kit
During the encounter, Bedford Police Officer Bell conducted an open-air sniff around Northern’s vehicle with K-9 Castiel, who gave a positive alert for the presence of narcotics.
A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded:
- A loaded black and purple Taurus GX2 9mm handgun tucked between the driver’s seat and center console, with a bullet chambered.
- A “Whizzinator” synthetic urine device in its original packaging on the passenger floorboard.
- Two Samsung cellphones, one of which tested positive for methamphetamine residue inside its protective case.
During a search of Northern’s person, officers recovered $2,876 in cash from his front right pocket, along with an additional $50 inside his wallet.
Connection to Ongoing State Police Probe
While officers were on scene, Lawrence County Sheriff Greg Day arrived to speak with Northern regarding an ongoing investigation being conducted by the Indiana State Police (ISP). ISP troopers later took custody of the cash, cellphones, and wallet recovered during the arrest.
A criminal history check confirmed Northern has multiple prior felony convictions, legally classifying him as a serious violent felon prohibited from possessing firearms.
Northern was transported and booked into the Lawrence County Jail.
