LYNN – A Winchester woman is officially facing a murder charge following the July death of Lynn Town Marshal Brad Fisher, who was fatally struck while attempting to stop a fleeing suspect during a high-speed police pursuit.
According to law enforcement officials, Maci Atkinson was driving a stolen van while actively attempting to evade police. Atkinson was fleeing from officers to avoid arrest on several outstanding drug-related warrants.
During the pursuit, Marshal Fisher attempted to intervene by deploying stop sticks to disable the fleeing vehicle. Police state that Atkinson struck Fisher with the stolen van during the chase. Shortly after hitting the marshal, Atkinson crashed the vehicle into a dump truck.
Marshal Fisher was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Following the investigation, prosecutors filed multiple criminal counts against Atkinson. In addition to the murder charge, she faces:
- Attempted aggravated battery
- Resisting law enforcement
- Criminal recklessness
- Auto theft
- Unlawful possession of a syringe
Atkinson remains held in custody at the Randolph County Jail. Prosecutors have announced they are seeking a sentence of life imprisonment with the possibility of parole. Her initial court hearing is scheduled for September 14.
