Governor Braun proclaims September College Savings Month; $10,000 Indiana529 sweepstakes announced

INDIANA Governor Mike Braun has officially designated September 2026 as College Savings Month across Indiana, encouraging Hoosier families to prepare for future post-secondary education costs. In conjunction with the proclamation, state officials announced the launch of the annual Indiana529 Education Sweepstakes, offering one lucky family a $10,000 account deposit.

The statewide sweepstakes aims to raise awareness of 529 education savings plans and help reduce future reliance on student loan debt.

“Every Hoosier child deserves the opportunity to choose the education and career path that’s right for them,” said Indiana State Treasurer Daniel Elliott. “A $10,000 Indiana529 account deposit supports their goals with less student loan debt.”

Benefits of the Indiana529 Plan

Managed by the state, Indiana529 plans offer flexible options for families saving for college, trade schools, technical training, or registered apprenticeship programs both within Indiana and out-of-state.

Investments in the program grow tax-deferred, and withdrawals remain completely tax-free when utilized for qualified educational expenses such as tuition, room and board, books, computers, and credentialing fees. Additionally, eligible Indiana taxpayers can receive a 20% state income tax credit on annual contributions, worth up to $1,500 per year ($750 for married individuals filing separately).

“The future will be here before you know it, and Indiana529 is here to help families plan for it,” said Marissa Rowe, executive director of the program. “$10,000 is a strong start towards that future education and career.”
