BEDFORD — The Lawrence County Council is set to convene for its upcoming regular session at 4:30 p.m. on August 25th, in the Lawrence County Courthouse. Council members will tackle a packed agenda featuring department restructurings, salary requests, multiple personnel hiring approvals, and local funding initiatives.
The meeting will open with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the approval of minutes from the July 14, 2026 special meeting and the July 28, 2026 regular session.
A major focus of the agenda involves several appointments and personnel requests. The council will consider hire requests from Martha Turner, April Collins, Penny Cobb, and Paula Kern-Edwards. Brian Sowder is scheduled to present a hire request alongside proposals for budget transfers and additional appropriations, while Ody Ekwonwa will also address the council regarding additional funding.
In addition, Kylie McPike is slated to present an update on behalf of the Veterans Office, and Allison May will introduce a resolution to approve a bond proposal for the Mitchell Public Library.
Under items for consideration, the council will review a proposed Baker Tilly MUST contract.
Several department heads are also scheduled to bring forward key updates:
- Prosecutor Sam Arp will present requests regarding salary changes and additional appropriations.
- Sheriff Greg Day will outline a personnel restructuring plan, a salary proposal, and requests for additional funds.
- Chief Public Defender Tim Sledd will request department fund transfers.
The meeting will conclude with a review of court orders and any remaining unfinished old business.
